47coverweb.jpgMichael Jackson, MTV, Hiroshima. Yes August certainly has a lot to answer
for... World War I, British troops descending on the streets of Belfast,
the day Anne Frank got pinched – history’s handslap to the testicles.
For it’s generally around this time of year that you start to wish this pathetic excuse for a summer would end, that gigs worth going to cost less than 700 quid, that those forever haunting Back To School ads would
just fuck off...

How quickly things change, seems like only yesterday we were confidently predicting a nation of
sun fried tomato look-a-likes, gleefully stripped bare and poised on every grassy knoll, but the Weather Gods (not to be confused with ‘the real’ God, as they are merely spiteful) saw fit to make a mockery of such musings and got down to the serious business of pissing rain. Every. Single. Day. (Seemingly, at least.) But, as we so eloquently like to put it; fuck ‘em. We’ve still managed, fighting Irish style-y (i.e. through blood, sweat and tea), to come up trumps in this time of trauma. Knockanstockan Festival, in particular, a huge success, a whopper weekend, and more than enough to recharge the belief batteries.

Within the 720,000 A5s printed this month, we too have done our best to turn that frown upside down. Our Three To Watch a telling reminder of exactly why we do this – Solar Bears, Alice Stands and Jabbas, take a bow... Your talent inspires. Elsewhere, we’re as proud as liquor-laced punch to highlight a true instigator, The (off-licence loving) Shed. Then there’s this month’s cover story – a celebration of (probably) the best band we’ve heard all year, Micachu And The Shapes, coming soon to an Electric Picnic near you... And while all eyes, admittedly, are now September faced, don’t give up on the Elvis killer just yet – as our trust-worthy gig recommendations point out; there’s some debuting Bats, a Belsonic Belfast, face melting Deerhunters, a Psycho’s Birthday party, and more, to look forward to this month.
Bring on the Lúnasa. Niall Turner
