Clockwork Noise & 8Ball
clockworkfront.jpg8Ball - They veer wildly between the bleeps, bells, whistles of ambient music and the anthems of a regular guitar band

In a week where I was unceremoniously snubbed in my attempt to interview a lanky guitarist from a Leicester band who are currently on 'fire', it was perhaps time I got back to basics and started supporting the little guy once again.

So it’s with a heavy heart I write that Clockwork Noise and 8 Ball in Whelans provided a night of musical schizophrenia; here were two bands who were trying to squeeze too many musical elements together. Both bands employed an 'all but the kitchen sink' approach that gobbled up myriad influences and styles. Both bands were guilty of trying to be all things to all people.

Clockwork Noise provided a musical and visual united front and are fundamentally solid musicians. The frontman sang in a pained, distorted style over a wall of crunching guitars, but ultimately it lacked spark. The most impressive aspect of Clockwork Noise was the violin playing, though sadly it was under utlised. Greater presence of the violin could have created a more elegiac sound a more dramatic razor edge for the rest of the band to play against. Instead, the band opt for American college rock avoiding Arcade Fire-esque territory and dodge galloping towards edgy rock-trad or even The Frames (unfashionable statement there!).

8 Ball represented a band who are about four or five bands in one! A sort of muddled fusion that’s mostly pleasant if a little boring. They veer wildly between the bleeps, bells, whistles of ambient music and the anthems of a regular guitar band. They played their upcoming single '20th Century Man' which may have some commercial appeal. A quirky, happy clappy tune you might hear on a T.V. advert. These guys were definitely at their best when they tapped into their dancier side with the female singer providing upbeat vocals and energy.

I was going finish on some ridiculous analogy about magic pictures (the kind that reveal themselves as you stare at them), but realise simply there's no point. Potential but needs polish, Check out Clockwork Noise and 8 Ball and perhaps make up your own mind!
